For this week’s Try It Tuesday I thought I would share one of my daughter’s favorite Interactive songs. This is not a ground breaking spectacular, over the top activity, but that is the beauty of it. You can sing our interactive color song just about anywhere, and it’s a great way to keep your child entertained. My two and a half-year-old asks if we can sing this song all the time, and I gladly bust into an off key version of our color song at any moment. You will often find my daughter pointing at different objects, telling me what color they are, and then requesting, “Now do white things!”
Many of the songs I make up to teach my daughter different subjects are a twist on a song we have heard on YouTube, and this interactive color song is no different. When my niece was in Kindergarten she would sing these color songs that she learned at school, and my daughter would giggle and clap. I quickly looked these songs up on YouTube, and we have been watching them ever since. You can click here to find the color songs I am referring to. The songs are very catchy, and spell out the colors to the tune of different popular tunes, as they talk about different objects that go along with each color. Together with my daughter, and I made up a fun game to go along with the songs. The first part starts off with the lyrics from the kindergarten color blue song we found on YouTube, then it morphs into an interactive version my daughter, and I made up while goofing around.

Our Interactive Color Song/Game
(To the tune of The Farmer in the Dell)
B-L-U-E spells blue
B-L-U-E spells blue
Hi-ho did you know, B-L-U-E spells blue!
(Can you find something that’s blue?)
This _________ is blue
(What else is blue?)
This __________ is too
Hi-ho did you know, ___________ is blue!
(Now what color should we do?)
_____________ is red
(What else is red?)
______________ is too!
Hi-ho did you know, ___________ is red!

When you first start singing this song with your child, you might have to point to different objects by yourself until your child gets the hang of it. Don’t be afraid to sing, and talk to yourself, and answer your own questions, I promise your child is listening! I played singing games like this with my daughter before she could even talk, and she’d play along by pointing, or just simply looking at me, and giggling as I held up different objects.
Eventually, your child will get the hang of it, and start to point to colored objects all on their own, and it will make you feel extremely proud! My 2.5-year-old has been actively participating in this game since she was about 18 months old, and she is now a pro. She will enthusiastically yell, “Now do white!!!!!!!!”, or “Let’s do brown!!!” She can pick out objects of any color, no matter where we are. We play this in any room of the house, and even while out in public. To add a little extra fun, you can shake a maraca or a jingle bell along with the beat. I love giving her one maraca, while I shake the other, and sing this song. Sometimes she even brings me the maracas when she wants me to sing this song.
I am so excited to share this Interactive color song with you for this weeks Try It Tuesday because I think all young kids will enjoy learning colors this way. I love it when I can find sneaky ways to teach my daughter when she thinks she is just having fun. Even better is the fact that she actively asks to sing this song, and there is no struggle at all to get her to learn. I hope you sing this song with your child this week and stay tuned for next week’s Try It Tuesday activity. Happy Learning!

My son and I will try this song 😊This is something new to him, since he is always been following YouTube nursery rhymes only. Thanks for sharing.
You are welcome, I hope he likes it as much as my daughter does! She loves when we sing songs.
Oh my gosh, I love this idea!! My first grader has been singing the color songs for years. We are always singing the same thing over and over in the car to distract my 7-month-old that hates quiet car rides. This will be a very welcome change up for school runs, thank you!
Your welcome, I like that there are always different objects to point to, depending on where you are, so it isn’t always exactly the same every time. I agree it gets a little crazy to sing the same exact lyrics over, and over! At least there is a little bit of a variety with this one! 😁
Very cute song! I love that it puts a physical aspect on finding something to match with the color. I love it!
Thank you! I learned early on that my daughter loves showing off what she knows, and this song gives her plenty of opportunity to show off how well she recognizes color. Plus this seems to be an amazing distraction to help her switch gears during a temper tantrum, since it gives her brain another task to focus on!
